Description

Orang-utans are large apes that live in Southeast Asia on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. The apes live mostly in trees and swing from branch to branch using their arms.

Orang-utans are very intelligent creatures, and have been known to use objects they find as tools. They use leaves as umbrellas to keep them dry and as cups to drink from. They are shy and solitary animals and live alone in large territories.

Orang-utans are an endangered species, decreasing greatly in numbers, their greatest enemy is man. Logging and plantations are opening up previously inaccessible areas to poachers who invade the forest, the mothers are often shot and their babies are taken and sold as pets.

Orphan orang-utans that are lucky enough to be rescued are taken to the orang-utan Foundation`s care centre in Southern Borneo, there they receive love, comfort and treatment they desperately need to survive. They are taught the essential survival skills enabling them to eventually return to the wild.

Many orphans have been rehabilitated and now live independent, safe and happy lives in parts of the Lamanday Nature Reserve. By adopting an orphan on the CWI`s adoption programme - you will ensure that the lucky orang-utan will receive all the attention it needs to be rehabilitated to the wild.
