The Duke of York's Theatre was named the Trafalgar Theatre when it opened in 1892, but in honour of the future King George V, it changed its name to the Duke of York’s in 1895. it premiered the very first performance and character of Peter Pan, the J.M. Barrie classic which gave the world the name Wendy, a name especially made up for the book.

London’s Capital Radio bought the theatre in the 1970’s and it was almost immediately closed for refurbishments. The first production was “Rose” starring the present Hampstead and Highgate Labour M.P. Glenda Jackson.
