Despite a long history of theatres on this site, it underwent its last and final renovation in 1973. Its modern glass bears no resemblance to a theatre in fact it resembles a giant cinema complex.
Its first performance was a television recording of Marlene Dietrich's one-woman show. Officially it opened with a production of The Unknown Soldier and His Wife starring Peter Ustinov. Grease, starring Richard Gere as Danny followed.
The theatre was once again used as a television studios in 1977 and then returned to being used as a theatre. It premiered the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Trevor Nunn musical Cats, on 11 May 1981. When it closed in 2002 it was held the record for the longest running musical in the West End. The theatre hosted the 1977 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award and the Masters snooker between 1976 and 1978.
Between 2003- 2005 the theatre hosted the revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It will be host the world premiere of the new musical adaptation of Gone With The Wind which will be directed by Trevor Nunn.
